AHC: No Monarchies in Nordic Countries

Meaning that Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Finland and Iceland have no monarchies, duchies, etc. of any kind by 2011. No stipulations on what the alternative governments are, but is it doable with a POD of 1900?

Hm... a POD might be hard to do, but several might get you there. A republic was, from what I understand, a viable alternative for Norway in 1905, and you might get something for Sweden through worsening the Courtyard Crisis or having events spin out of control in 1917 (a different SAP leadership, and the Social Democrats may have encouraged a revolution to bring down the king). I suppose one could argue that a Norwegian Republic could have encouraged Swedish republicanism, which would only leave Denmark. Denmark might or might not have had its early 20th century incidents (I do not feel knowledgeable enough to say), but if not one could always take a decreased-butterfly view and aim for a People's Republic of Denmark (Iceland already being on the route for republican independence at that point). Though I suppose that could make the Faroes into a Kingdom of Denmark in exile, which would mean the challenge would remain unfilled, if barely.

Norway needed a monarchy to become independent in 1905, so that year is out of the question. 1928, when the Labour Party came to power for the first time; or 1940 when Crown Prince Olav was encouraged by friends to commit a coup d'etat (deposing his father and becoming a German puppet, thus making the monarchy much weaker in 1945) could be possible PODs.

For Sweden, I think the hunger riots during WWI could be a possible turning point.

For Denmark...I'm not really sure. The Easter Crisis in 1920?

I am not confident of that, though I grant that that was a common view in Norway at the time.
Maybe if one of the Nordics ally themselves with Germany in WW1/WW2 and their monarchy is ousted by the victorious allies/entente?

Seems quite unlikely though...
The one that is easiest to get to ally with the Alliance is probably Sweden... but the problem is, the easiest way to get Alliance-Sweden would impact the course of the war in a way significantly beyond Sweden's direct military impact, and might jeopardise the Entente's victory. If the Entente still wins, well, Sweden's diplomatic position would not be all that bad (and I note, Bulgaria's monarchy survived in OTL...).

In any case, somebody would have to screw up seriously if Norway was not to become a monarchy. Remember, 78,9% of the votes (which, even taking into account absent voters, means more than half of eligible Norwegians) in the referendum were for Prince Carl (aka King Haakon).

I see two possibilities for Denmark.
In chronological order:

- The Easter Crisis of 1920
HM King Christian X dismissed the elected government led by C. T. Zahle, over a dispute about whether or not to re-annex central Slesvig to Denmark following WWI.
The result was a public uproar that COULD have meant the end of the monarchy, and the result would have probably been a parliamentary democrazy with a figurehead President.

- Post WW2
The Red Army (I believe it was Rokossovsky who got the order to head for Denmark) beats Montgomery to Denmark (this came eerily close to happening OTL), and thus it is the USSR that "liberates" Denmark*. This means that post WW2, Denmark finds itself on the wrong side of the Iron Curtain, a puppet communist government installed by the Soviets. This, of course, would mean the end of the monarchy.
If the Royal Family managed to escape before a drumhead trial could do the same as what happened to the Tsar in Russia, they'd probably flee to England in exile.
What would happen after 1989 is anybody's guess, though. The collapse of communism might mean the restoration of a figurehead monarch from the dethroned house, out of a sense of tradition and history...then again, it might not.

*This will probably mean actual fighting on Danish territory, because the Germans were very very reluctant to surrender to the Red Army, but that's a different matter

Just have the socialists abolish them when they come to power in said countries.

That would require my #2 - the Soviets install a puppet regime. Or a POD before 1900 with a much, much more successful radical socialist movement gaining overwhelming popular support and thus able to either seize power democratically and amend the constitution, OR carry out a violent revolution.
