We get part of the way there by having the Korean War not happen, and Henry A. Wallace not breaking with the Progressive Party. Without a Korean War, Ike chooses not to run in 1952, and the GOP chooses a Taft-Nixon ticket, which narrowly wins. Taft dies of cancer on schedule and Nixon becomes president. Humphrey, though, is a long shot as a Democratic presidential nominee in 1956...
