AHC: Nixon Beats Two Kennedys

I was looking at the recent "Democratic Primaries '68" thread, and I was thinking about how humiliated Nixon would have been if he had lost a presidential election to a Kennedy twice. And that's how I came up with the idea for this AHC.

Your challenge is to have Richard Nixon defeat two Kennedys in two different elections - once for his first term, once for his second term.

Rules: The terms that Nixon wins do not have to be consecutive:)p;)), and the two defeated Kennedys cannot be the same Kennedy. For example, you cannot have Nixon beat JFK in '60 and have President Nixon beat JFK in a '64 rematch, because you used only one Kennedy.

Oh, and you get a cookie if the two elections are not '68-'72 or '60-'64.

Channeling RogueBeaver...:p

Easy. Nixon wins in '60, Pat dies in '62 of alcoholism, and Nixon resigns in grief. JFK doesn't run again due to poor health. In '68 Nixon comes back to edge out RFK. Bobby succeeds Nixon in '72. ;)

OK, here's my (likely flawed) attempt --

Maybe Nixon beats John in 1960, but the latter still wins the popular vote (even closely). Ted Kennedy still wins the Senate seat in 1962.

So, as 64 draws near, John is seen as the logical frontrunner for the Democratic nomination -- and is then killed, along with his brother Bobby, in a brutal attack. The nation mourns heavily, and leading democrats ask Ted to run in their place -- and he accepts.

Initially, it looks like Ted Kennedy stands a very real chance of unseating Nixon, who ITTL is having a rough term, partially due to complications in Cuba. Then, as he talks more on camera, the voters become more hesitant, as his inexperience shows.

In November, Nixon is re-elected by a comparatively narrow margin.

Is this passable?

I don't see how RFK is a viable candidate without becoming a national figureby serving in his brother's administration.

That seems implausible. Taft and other Presidents didn't resign under the same circumstances and Nixon had his ambition. Although if his term was going south and it was a good cover... hmmm :D

Let's see... triple win!
Nixon beats JFK '60
Nixon loses to LBJ '64 barely?
Nixon beats RFK '68 RFK is shot shortly after
Nixon beats TFK '72?
Or some combination of the above

Nixson for all his personal faults was a good president and once In office will serve two terms barring some horrible scandal. However if he wins in 1960 he’ll be a much less bitter and prone to paranoia, so there’s an improvement there.

Also Nixson, would likely be more progressive than JFK on civil-rights issues. Also his health and personal life aren’t a concern the way JFK’s were.

For Nixson to beat JFK, have JFK's heath problems shown up somehow. JFK sold himself as the ''young & vigorous'' candidate which was deeply ironic as Nixson was only four years older and in much more robust health than JFK.

Hmmm... Bonus points for not 1960 you say?

Joe Kennedy Jr NOT killed in WWII.

Eisenhower dies (say) 1955.
Nixon VP takes over and runs in 1956, beating Joe Jnr.
1960 is a rematch against younger brother John, who he also beats.

Bit implausible, but a bit more fun.
