AHC: Nintendo remains as prominent as PlayStation?

During the 90's, the main consoles were rather PS1 or N64.

Since the release of original XBox, however, and especially the Wii, Nintendo has kind of taken a back seat to more "conventional" game systems like the PS3 and Xbox 360. How can we prevent this, preferably without butterflying away the Xbox?

I don't know that your assessment is correct.

http://www.vgchartz.com/analysis/platform_totals/

Nintendo DS (DS) 154.30

PlayStation 2 (PS2) 153.68

Game Boy (GB) 118.69

PlayStation (PS) 104.25

Wii (Wii) 98.80

Game Boy Advance (GBA) 81.51

PlayStation Portable (PSP) 75.92

Xbox 360 (X360) 74.25

PlayStation 3 (PS3) 72.49

These are the top nine systems' sales in millions of units.

Leaving out the handhelds (in which Nintendo dominates), Wii is ahead of its contemporary competitors, and not far behind the PS2.

In software,

PlayStation 2 (PS2) 1,638.95

PlayStation (PS) 962.01

Wii (Wii) 840.93

Nintendo DS (DS) 778.20

Xbox 360 (X360) 743.00

PlayStation 3 (PS3) 646.00

Game Boy (GB) 501.11

Again, Wii is beating its contemporaries, though the PS2, through its longevity and backward compatibility (and all-around awesomeness) is the leader.

The main thing of Nintendo was the fiasco of the N64(the thing was something who make Nintendo have a war with the Silicon Graphics, the system manage to have a bad RAM specs who made the use of CD and high capacity Cartidge Impossible since the begin) and when Iwata become the CEO and have charte blanque from Yamauichi, he decided to make the thing in his way.

But remember something, why did you mention PS and Xbox as 'conventional' those thing are nothing but watered down PC, the Wii is a convenctional system, only put the game and play, not updates or other thing.

And the whole thing is a marketing war in the first world, here Nintendo have a lot of love with a lot of population, specially old people and childerns

But, the N64 didn't flop that bad in comparsion with SEGA

I'm not talking about commercial performance, but development, the N64 was hard to developt thanks to the goal who made Silicon Graphics to Nintendo(paying for a expensive propertary ram, who make the use of CD or High Capacity Cartidge imposible, that was the N64DD for years to be made and was a flop), only Miyamoto EAD'S, Rare and Iguana were the one who knew the whole tricks of the N64.

You forgot the DBWI at the beginning.

Come on, man. How are you ignoring history?

Xbox 360: Standard controls.
Wii: Motion controls.
Playstation 3: Standard controls (but we have "motion controls", too! We're hip and with it!)

Fast forward a few years

Xbox 360: Motion controls.
Playstation 3: Motion controls stolen directly from Nintendo.

Come on. The Wii sold twice as many as either of its competitors. Back seat?!

I agree about your assessment of Wii's market strength, but Sony is going to stop manufacturing the PS 2 soon (coughChinese counterfeiters not withstandingcough).

However, the PS 2 is the ultimate idiot-proof, casual gamer console, so who knows how long it will continue to be the most played of all these techs.

There does seem to be a snobbery towards the Wii as Sony and Microsoft focus on the 'mature' market with unending streams of grey and brown ultra-violent shooters, while the Wii is kiddy and even grandma can play it. How naff!

Though I'm really a PC gamer and for console fun still cling to my SNES so I don't really have any stake in the contemporary console wars.

Yeah, I worded the OP poorly, this is what I meant to say.
