AHC: New England secedes from the US to join Canada

Create a scenario where some or all of the states that make up the New England region of the United States ( Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Connecticut) secede from the United States to join Canada.

Only one rule: You cannot have the US retain the Articles of Confederation.

Would the British even want them back? North America wasn't all that great for them. The only real reasons were tariff revenue, their honor, and protecting loyalists. All those reasons are gone. If New England was OK to pay tariffs, there wouldn't be a USA. Their pride was wounded after the ARW, but the Battle of Trafalgar restored it. Any loyalist households left left were either assimilated (usually the descendants after the original loyalists were bullied and their land confiscated) or ran to Canada. The British have no desire for territory in the New World unless someone hands it over on a silver platter. New England threated to seced in 1813, but even if that happened unless an extremely pro-British man was in charge the most that might happen is a non aggression pact and the re-adoption of pound sterling in NE.

I can see NE seceding the US to become an independent republic that later joins a Commonwealth type organisation. I can't see them adopting the British Monarch as Head of State which would be an essential part of joining Canada.

Living in what was one of the Allen brother's large, Several million acres, land grant I was quite interested in them. The Allen brothers at one time attempted to sell Vermont back to the British Empire for several million pounds.
