AHC: Neanderthals in scandinavia???

the title tells the story: could it be possibe for neanderthals to survive in scandinavia (by anny means, but realisticly speaking)??

I am interested to create a TL from which this would be a part of. but iff it issnt possible, or extremely unlikely, or nobody is interested, I will scrap it;)

Probably not. Scandinavia was thoroughly glaciated at the time Neanderthals flourished.

One speculation I read years ago was that some tiny relict population of Neanderthals that lasted into Classical times was the basis for legends about ogres, trolls, etc. Ogres were ugly, lived in the wild and ate humans and so, apparently, did Neanderthals

I doubt that's true, because after you've seen both a few ugly people as well as some wilderness, the idea of a creature a bit more ugly and a bit more scary living a bit deeper in the forest or underground doesn't really take whole alot of imagination...
Also storys like that have existed everywhere, also where neanderthals never lived

Don't really disagree, although Michael Creighton did a novel years ago "The Easters of the Dead" which used surviving Neanderthals in the 700-800 AD period as a premise. (Not that that proves anything :D)

alright.

is their anny way to get neanderthals into northern europa, or let them last longer intop history and eventualy driven to scandinavia???

Some people think that the Musk Ox, which sure looks and behaves like a survivor of the last Ice Age was protected from modern human predation by a chance extension of an arm of the Luarentian glacier across Labrador, protecting a population of oxen from the proto-Indians.

Just use handwavium to do the same thing along the lower edge of the Baltic. When the Cro-Magnons arrive, they retreat northwards and survive at least until the Saami show up.

hmmm

this certainly gave me an idea to make a possible senario.
maybe a certain coo-existance between Saami and Neanderthals. or a division...or no Saami in the most remote areas.

Far out! I wonder if that's where I saw that? Thanks Roisterer

I once read that the Saami, despite asian looks, are a population of European origin (with an admixture from when the language came in from the east).

Apparently the Saami missed the development of the european look by being genetically isolated for 10 -15 thousand years. Having the proto-Saami fail to get into the isolated area/niche, and there might be room for Neanderthals. At least if they aqquire a little bit more behavioral flexibility.

Alternatly, the Saami interact with a relic Neanderthal population, being subsumed, but managing to inject a few modern behaviors, allowing the Neanderthals more ability to duck and cover ecologically.

Have the neanderthals diet expand a bit. Have them eat fish, then they don't need to worry about migration patterns and changing ecology as much, just follow the rivers and coasts. It might allow some of them to keep just ahead of the humans until they find a nice little isolated area.

Thanks for the idea: I think I have an idea now how to do this, thanks;):D
