AHC: Nazi bases in Antarctica

I know that Nazi UFO bases in Antarctica are a staple conspiracy theory, but is an actual Nazi presence in Antarctica plausible? Here's my idea from another thread:

For extra fun, make Hitler form research stations in Antarctica to discover links with the Aryan Super Race, guarded by fanatical SS. When the first Aryan baby is born in Antarctica, Hitler proclaims the station Neustuttgart (capital of Neuswabenland), and sends settlers, engaging in fishing and whaling.

Knowing Neustuttgart's isolation, Hitler orders vast quantities of ammo to be sent, hoping it can resist attack until the KM defeats Britain.

When war breaks out, a small British expedition from South Georgia waltz in expecting a quick victory. They're destroyed. By now Britain is under sustained attack and a Nazi antarctic base is its least worry.

Only after the US enters the war, is Neustuttgart captured.

A Nazi Antarctic base? Sure, considering that they actually had an Antarctic claim OTL... It doesn't have to go much further to turn into an actual Antarctic base.

Wouldn't the Arctic be more practical...?...;)....

Fred

on short term it would make Germany again a colonial power without a war with France or England
with Antarctic Neuschwabenland and it's raw material resource (coal), what the Arctic not has.

But in Hitler logic of new "Lebensraum" in East europe and russia, was no place for Antarctic base

Perhaps the Nazi base would be small enough that in order to fit in with conspiracy theories that maybe an entire fleet was needed to find it.

Could South Africa be here Helpful ?
there were some strange connection between South Africa and the Third reich
like post world war adoption of German orphans, under follow condition: must be Aryan, there death parents member of NSDAP or SS
that no Joke i saw on ARTE a TV-documentation over this South Africa "adoption" program !

Back to TL
South Africa could supply the Antarctic Neuschwabenland base or the "town" Neustuttgart, while they use local coal resource for heating and power.
alternative were Argentina also a option.

Why would the Germans do this?

There little or no strategic value to such a base (apart from propaganda), it unsupportable in wartime from Germany, and it would be trivial for the Royal Navy to shut down. Actually, in case of war, it would be trivial for the RN to rescue the Germans there, since they would need rescue after being cut off from the fatherland.

Look, I like Vril and UFO bases and the like as much as the next guy (and yes, why did the USA launch such a MASSIVE expedition to Antarctica in 1946 - Operation Highjump?), but it simply isn't plausible that even the nutters in Germany in the 1930s would spend their limited resources on this. I simply don't believe that they could have found anything down there that we, with 80 more years of looking and much better technology, haven't found.

If you define a "presence" as a research base/weather station with a couple of dozen people to "show the flag", it was plausible.
A massive base with hundreds/thousands of people and the industrial/military resources to stand-off the Western Allies requires Alien Space Bats to be involved.
Operation High-Jump is an interesting conspiracy target. I believe it is possible that there was a covert search for high Nazi leaders underway. Especially in the chaos around the ending of the fighting in Europe the idea that a small group (hitler and his entourage) had managed to get away via either submarine or aircraft and headed South was more acceptable than we feel today. The "base" that they were headed towards might have been nothing more than a cargo ship anchored in an isolated cove. Nothing spectacular, but enough to let Hitler squeeze out another few months or years of freedom and life.
So, High-Jump went down with resources to do actual scientific research...but was also ready to deal with the size of "settlement" that was most likely to be encountered if the Nazis were down there. When High-Jump found nothing, it allowed one set of rumors to be ignored as unfounded.

Yeah, a research station/colony with a few dozen to a few hundred people, maybe supplied by the argentines or whoever is possible.

But you'd need to get the Antarctic expedition running in the mid 30's, and having them find a decent location. A sheltered bay on Kerguelen is probably the best bet, reworking the 1877 coal-mining operation, or somewhere on one of the Oasis on the mainland.

It'd make for a decent supply base maybe. But it'd need a few massive submarines or commerce raiders to stay decently well supplied. But it'd make a decent bolt-hole post war. If the coal's good enough, maybe it'd be possible to base a couple auxiliary cruisers, or a modified/ice-rated K-class out there.
