On April 1926, during an appearance of Mussolini in Rome's Piazza Campidoglio, an Irish woman named Violet Gibson shot at Mussolini three times, two bullets hit his nose(Read more here
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-1262670/The-deb-shot-Mussolini-How-aristocrats-daughter-came-close-killing-Il-Duce.html). She was about to shoot a third time, but the revolver jammed. So if the revolver shot a third time and it strikes Mussolini in such a way that it kills him or injures him enough that he can't be dictator anymore. So a couple of questions on what would happen....
Would fascism survive and if so who will take power?
If not, would power return to the monarchy? Would there ever be the Republic of Italy?
Would there still be a Civil War as in OTL?
What would happen to their colonies? Would the invasion of Abyssinia still occur (keep in mind that the successful invasion by Fascist Italy wasn't the first Italian invasion of Ethiopia.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/First_Italo-Ethiopian_War)?
What would be different about WWII(relations with Nazi Germany, neutrality, invasion by the Axis, Greater Italy)?
What would happen in the Spanish Civil War(The nationalists were supported by Fascist Italy)?
How would this affect emigration, the economy, foreign affairs?
Future prospects?
Also, what would happen to Ms. Gibson, in OTL, she was nearly lynched but spared by Mussolini and then put in a mental hospital. Things would probably go down differently.
Keep in mind that Mussolini was well admired throughout Italy at this time as much of his crimes were put in the shadows
Methinks Hitler will still come to power as his political career had already started. A lot less war casualties and war crimes and maybe a stronger economy but i'm not really sure.
Discuss.
