AHC: Mussolini Assassinated in 1926

On April 1926, during an appearance of Mussolini in Rome's Piazza Campidoglio, an Irish woman named Violet Gibson shot at Mussolini three times, two bullets hit his nose(Read more here http://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-1262670/The-deb-shot-Mussolini-How-aristocrats-daughter-came-close-killing-Il-Duce.html). She was about to shoot a third time, but the revolver jammed. So if the revolver shot a third time and it strikes Mussolini in such a way that it kills him or injures him enough that he can't be dictator anymore. So a couple of questions on what would happen....

Would fascism survive and if so who will take power?

If not, would power return to the monarchy? Would there ever be the Republic of Italy?

Would there still be a Civil War as in OTL?

What would happen to their colonies? Would the invasion of Abyssinia still occur (keep in mind that the successful invasion by Fascist Italy wasn't the first Italian invasion of Ethiopia. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/First_Italo-Ethiopian_War)?

What would be different about WWII(relations with Nazi Germany, neutrality, invasion by the Axis, Greater Italy)?

What would happen in the Spanish Civil War(The nationalists were supported by Fascist Italy)?

How would this affect emigration, the economy, foreign affairs?

Future prospects?

Also, what would happen to Ms. Gibson, in OTL, she was nearly lynched but spared by Mussolini and then put in a mental hospital. Things would probably go down differently.

Keep in mind that Mussolini was well admired throughout Italy at this time as much of his crimes were put in the shadows

Methinks Hitler will still come to power as his political career had already started. A lot less war casualties and war crimes and maybe a stronger economy but i'm not really sure.

Discuss.

If there is no fascist Italy, WWII would probably be butterflied away. WWII only started after Hitler assured himself he'd only have the Western Front to worry about. Italy not being on board would
a) open a new front south,
b) allow the allies complete, unchallenged control over the Mediterranean and North Africa
c) cut the road to the Balkans

Hitler would start a war. I'm sure of that. At best it would probably be delayedif he had no European allies.

He would perhaps start a war. Would probably not attack France though, that would be stupid without Italy support to at least keep the south front free

Hitler always knew that he'd fight France. He'd definitely go to war with them. Neither France or Britain would be willing to let Germany dominate the continent.

Even if the Facists lose power in Italy, Hitler still comes to power and still starts World War II. He attackec without Itsly OTL, so I assume he does it ITTL. If Italy is neutral, Hitler invades it. cCommonwealth forces defend Italy. Instead of an African front there is an Italian front.

Commonwealth forces defending Italy wouldn't be necessary, because they're probab'y not going to be involved in the war. They might invade Norway instead.

I think you are underestimating Hitler'sgreed. He would want Italy
For what? It has little to no resources, would be hard to defend and presumably has a powerful army and airforce with strong fortifications built into the alps. Hitlers focused on Russia. That's what he wants.

perhaps, after fall of France, Spain joins the Axis.
as for Italy...
it could be revresed position, Yugoslavia in axis and Italy attacked (or both Italy and Yugoslavia neutral, who knows).
it would be interesting if after Benito's death, socialists came to power in Italy, perhaps resulting in stronger Comintern.

With a POD in 1926 all talk of hitter and WW2 should be suspended. It's more then likely been butterflied. Now that doesn't mean there will be no conflicts. Nobody got what they wanted out of the Great War and wanted a rematch.

No Mussolini this early could severely handicap fascism in Italy and maybe the rest of Europe. The only successor I have seen talked about is Balbo, but he is too young in 1926.

Mussolini never had the same level of control as Stalin or hitler. He had to deal with the king and army generals. Without him they will have more power.
