Apparently at one point a prominent member of the INC (I don't remember who) played with the idea of the Duke of Mountbatten being the leader of India. So suppose somehow the INC, Britain and the Duke all agree to do so what would happen?

I'm not sure who the Duke of Mountbatten is you are referring to here? Could you actually be referring to Lord Louis Mountbatten, the first Earl Mountbatten of Burma?

Mountbatten was the Governor-General, if only briefly. Even if India remains a Commonwealth Realm, however, Dickie likely will act like every other Governor-General does - meeting with new foreign diplomats, delivering the Speech from the Throne, and generally being India's ornamental face for the world. It's also unlikely that he would do anything against Nehru - IIRC the two got along splendidly.Apparently at one point a prominent member of the INC (I don't remember who) played with the idea of the Duke of Mountbatten being the leader of India.
