AHC: More minorities vote republican

So I recently learned that republicans used to be a lot better with minorities. A majority majority Asians voted for Bush Sr in 1992, the vast majority of Muslims voted for Bush jr in 2000, and even Reagan was quoted as saying "Latinos are Republicans. They just don't know it yet." So with any POD after 1985 have Muslims stay a solid GOP voting bloc, Asians lean republican, and have hispanics be a swing voting bloc.

What butterflies does this have on the US? What policy changes do we see? Is the republican party less evangelical? Do the democrats try to get more white people to vote for them? What effects does a less Xenophobic GOP have on the US?

No 9/11, for starters. I recall reading somewhere that, in the 2000 election, the majority of Muslims had voted Republican. (If anyone can confirm this, I'd be grateful).

I can't remember his name(Ed somebody?), but there was at that time some big GOP strategist who was really focussed on bringing Muslims and arabs into the party.

This discussion is doomed for the political chat subforum, but before it gets there, I’ll offer this thought:

Hispanics, in particular, tend to self-identify as ‘white’ as they get richer, and are more generations removed from immigrating, even if their ancestry is not mixed. Hell, my Luso-American father-in-law, an immigrant, is probably a stauncher Republican than I am.

Thats just one example, but it gets to the heart of the matter that as any given demographic group assimilates into the US mainstream culture, they tend to reflect the overall division more. Consider Catholics, a group that used to be pretty much automatically Democrat, but are now about 50/50, like the country at large.

Add in the tendency towards intermarriage. A quick look at wikipedia, for example, shows that 45% of Asian and Pacific American women born in the US married white men in 1998. That results in a generation that is likely to identify as white.

So, my point is that even if the general idea that ‘whites tend to vote Republican’ and ‘minorities tend to vote Democrat’ remains vaguely accurate, the idea of white or minority are vague enough that such a scenario is not only plausible, but both likely and, from a certain point of view, already the case.

No watergate, the GOP continues with Pre-Nixon economics, so you get 15-20% of blacks voting GOP consistently the way they did in the 70s and 80s.
