AHC: Mongolia remains disunited?

I present to all of you, a challange.

What would the world potentially look like if the Mongol clans had remained disunited, and never went on their conquering spree across Asia, the middle East, and Europe.

Mesopotamia doesn't quite go the dogs and Baghdad remains to be an important Islamic cultural and religious center with the Caliphate being based there. And the Crusader states probably fall a lot sooner with the attention of the Egyptians not diverted by the Mongols.

The ERE may or may not be in more trouble, since the Seljuks are splintering anyway (most likely) - but on the other hand, more of a threat to Nicaea.

The Russian states are allowed to tear each other apart without outside interference - Kiev probably remains intact since no one with a reason to raze it is there.

The Mongols happened to push a lot of Turkic peoples westward towards Persia, Anatolia, Central Asia and Russia. Central Asia will remain Iranian-speaking; the Mongol invasions allowed the Turkic populations to come in and assimilate the remaining locals. The Cumans are not going to go into Hungary for the reasons they did in OTL so they will most likely stay where they're at.

Er... and why, exactly? When I looked it up once on WP, I found nothing about that.

Without the Mongols they might pull things together...or not.

From the article on Kaykhusraw II:

Although weakened, Seljuq power remained largely intact at the time of Kaykhusraw’s death in 1246. The Mongols failed to capture either the sultan’s treasury or his capital when they had the chance, and his Anatolian lands escaped the worst of the invaders’ depredations. The real blow to the dynasty was Kaykhusraw's inability to name a competent successor. With the choice of the three young brothers, Seljuq power in Anatolia no longer lay with Seljuq princes but instead devolved into the hands of Seljuq court administrators.

My italics. A situation with three sons and no clear successor is bound to end badly at least in the short term.

So the possibility that things fall apart anyway has to be mentioned, as well as mentioning your timeline as a good illustration of a much-changed world that could have been the case.

@Drago: Maybe, maybe not.

@Elfwine: It depends... Kaykhusraw may live longer, he may make a different decisions if the Mongols are absent, or some other power may use the situation. Choresm maybe? Which destroys the Rum-Sultanate, forcing their remains to turn west, attacking Nikaia or even the Balcans?

(In fact, seeing that my Chaos TL may have some flaws, sometimes I'm thinking about writing version 2.0 of it, seriously...)

Maybe though nothing's too certain. No Mongols means no Timur meaning the Christian communities in Persia and the Middle East survive.

Thank you very much for the interest, Frige, but I can't guarantee it. The original was a hard piece of work, and still needs improvement (India comes to mind!). Version 2.0 would be even harder to pull of, and I have less time for AH nowadays.

Still, for a taste, look here for some of my ideas.

Definitely. It might splinter - or it might do what it did in your timeline. But it is facing problems, so splintering is a possibility.

And if you do write a Chaos TL 2.0, add me to the list of people who would love to see it.

Some more ideas I may use, if I ever do it:

- Choresm attack the Seljuks from the flank after taking Armenia, Georgia and/or Trapezunt. Either they're completely crushed, or they manage to cross into Europe. Interesting twist: Constantinople survives as a Christian city state!
- The Seljuks in Europe expand into Hungary, Austria and Italy.
