AHC Monarch Power

With a POD of 1300 in England or later...

Here is the goals.

England's royal line is to unite the British Isles by outright conquest or personal unions. The War of the Roses either never happens or the Lancasters win or some cousin of the Lancasters win (Tudor anyone?). The Hapsburgs become Holy Roman Emperors and stay Catholic. The English/ British monarchy ends up ruling over at least India, major chunks of Africa, the Caribbean, and Australia. Areas that are ruled by Catholic rulers in OTL are also done so in TTL. (in other words these OTL events are NOT butterflied away).

By 1970s TTL, the technology base of the most advanced civilization should be OTL 1940 or later (1970s OTL or all the way to modern OTL is OK too, 1940 is just a floor).

Here are target changes.

England is not going to care if the Austrian Hapsburgs form a continental hegemony through marriages and personal unions (whether they succeed or not is another story, the English/ British just don't mind or are outright supportive). This means that they either don't give a damn about continental hedgemony or they must really trust the Catholic Hapsburgs.

North America's population has 75% European English speaking Christians who are Protestant if the English monarchy is protestant or Catholic if the monarchy is Catholic. The 25% contain Europeans that don't speak English, non Europeans, English speaking Europeans of other languages. It doesn't need to be ruled by the English/ British. In OTL Canada, the TTL biggest minority by far is the native Indians.

There is an odd number of world wars. The first (or only) takes place in the 1910s or 1920s. It lasts 3 years and the British are on the winning side. A front is in OTL California.

England's/ Great Britain's/ United Kingdom's (whatever it's called in TTL) monarch rules many areas outright and have tributary states by modern times. Their navy is slightly more powerful than the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th biggest navies. Their economy is the biggest of the world. The amount the government spends is equal to the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th biggest expenditures. This does not mean the ECONOMY is bigger than the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th biggest, I suppose they could collect more taxes than their other counterparts.

Europe is the most industrial continent in the world.

Now here is the real meat.

Most of Europe is ruled by either absolute monarchs or have however much power a High Middle Ages monarch would have.

England's monarch ends up with considerable power by modern times, but not infinite power. It's a constitutional monarchy and he has as much power as James II did before he got deposed. This means that he can't collect taxes without parliament but he does have considerable power. Even after the restoration of Charles II, the monarchy already lost power after the English Civil war, in other words their power was waning.

This is tricky. The problem is that constitutional monarchies usually devolve into democracies that come with a monarch. That means you have absolute monarchies (Saudi Arabia) and those that will rubber stamp anything (OTL Britain). You don't have any "powerful but limited" like England under James II.

I see that you are a new member, but this is really not how AH works. With a POD you have to account for changes in the future.

You POD seems to be around 1455-1487, i.e. the war of the roses. This means Martin Luther (1483), Zwingli (1484) and John Calvin (1509) are not born. That means no "Protestant Reformation" as we know it. Catholicism is maybe entrenched or reformed internally from the church or some other reform movement, with different tenets started by different people at a different time in a different place. Obviously this means no Henry VIII and no Anglicanism.

In fact this butterflies Columbus's Voyage, he may get a different patron (like France) or maybe no support at all. The New World may well be found later than OTL. A Portuguese explorer could just meet the Taino and leave without much interest. The colonization pattern and in fact the whole Columbian* Exchange would be very, very different. Maybe it's the Spaniards that set up plantations in Dixie* or the French or the Portuguese. Historically, the first settlement by the English was Jamestown in 1607, a full 115 years after Columbus. It would take an enormous amount of railroading to have a English dominated North America. Heck, there is no guarantee that they would be able to subdue the Scots in time to colonize. A different transatlantic exchange could well be far less advantageous to the Europeans. The Atlantic Slave Trade might never happen or be much lower volume. Without the massive profits from the sugar plantations, there would no financial spine to the advances in the 17th and 18th century that gave the West it's decisive edge over the East. Europe may very well not see industrialization till the 20th century or even at all.

The East would radically different just due to the butterfly factor. The Ming might never go isolationist and continue with Zheng He's expeditions or might not even collapse and fall to the Manchus. There probably is no Sengoku Jidai or Sakoku in Japan. Maybe the Turks end up ruling Rome or Vienna. The Timurid collapse will go very differently and that means no Babur and no Mughal Empire. The Rajputs may well supplant the Lodhis and we could have a Hindu, Rajput dominated state in the Indo-Gangetic plain. It is very unlikely that the East would fall behind as much as it did historically. It will almost certainly keep up, and you could have Indic, Sinic, Malay, European and Middle Eastern states instead compete over the world stage, or the East might pull ahead and come out on top. Pre-1492 POD is far back that these things have to be taken in to account.

Needless to say, there would almost certainly be no English Australia or World Wars or such. The British and other European Empires were built due to an enormous number of coincidences and sheer luck and your POD spectacularly upends this. Any such British Hegemony can only realistically be built with a POD of at least 1815.

The thing is... a lot of people on the forums would say the opposite, that the reformation in 1300s was pretty much going to happen thanks to indulgences and perceived or actual wrongs of the Catholic Church (this isn't a place to get into the argument which one it was). And honestly, from the perspective of history and politics reformation, how is modern day Lutharism different than Catharism other than that the former succeeded while the latter failed? Ideologically they were both different, but they were both products of what was going on in the Catholic Church around that time. In other words, lots of people on the forum would say that Martin Luther might be gone, but a reformation movement is inevitable.

I personally don't think a reformation movement is entirely inevitable, or maybe multiple attempts would be tried and not get far (Cathars, Lollards). However, it's hard to imagine an English POD affecting either the Catholic church or Germany being a hotbed of ideas. While Martin Luther is gone, the Catholic Church would likely be similar to OTL and Germany (I'm talking about the geographical region, obviously Germany only sort of exists) is still ideologically similar to OTL. This could be a problem.

Um, this should be obviously, but the colonization pattern going either better or worse for the English is obviously possible with a POD around the War of the Roses. Obviously any POD that leaves a negative butterfly are rejected for the AHC and any POD that allows similar to OTL or more success is allowed. Any course of events that lead to "no financial spine to the advances in the 17th and 18th century that gave the West it's decisive edge over the East" are rejected (I mean, they could have happened of course, they just don't meet the challenge).

What? Now that's just nuts. Certainly, with a War of the Roses POD, there is no English colonizing of Australia or world war as we know them. Obviously a different set of coincidences would be needed to accomplish the same end goal since OTL events are obviously not going to happen. Likewise, getting a bunch of nations all over the world to fight in a war shouldn't take too much imagination even if the world is very different than OTL. For example, a succession conflict that ends up dominion by alliance chain (while in OTL it was assassination, then Balkan crisis followed by alliance chain).

And to say a British Hegemony can only be built with a POD of 1815 or later is just silly. Certainly, many PODs before 1815 can prevent OTL British dominance... but why can't earlier PODs help British hegemony?
