AHC: Mexico Wins the War With the United States

Anglo-Mexican Alliance. Say a harsher war of 1812 where the rivalry is harder, and it stays strong.

British want Oregon, Mexicans want to keep Texas.

Make it possible for the Empire of Mexico to defeat the United States during the Mexican American War of 1846-48.

Once both nations were independent, the overarching strategic issue in the "west" of North America was whether the US would reach the Pacific before Mexico consolidated enough to defend what was their "northwest" and became the US "southwest."

So those dates of effective independence are - for the US - 1783 and for Mexico - 1829, which is the year the last Spanish attempt at a reconquest was defeated (by Santa Anna) and Bustamante overthrew Guerrero (with the army assembled to defeat the Spanish, notably.)

Note the above is six years after Agustin I was deposed and five years after he was stood against a wall and shot. Note that Mexicans really don't like monarchies...;)

So the structural problem for Mexico in any strategic comparison is the US is - roughly - four decades ahead of Mexico in terms of national consolidation, stability, economic development, etc.

Add in the destruction and loss of a decade+ of revolution turned civil war (population is estimated to have dropped from 6 million to 4 million, for example), and unless you go well back to the early Seventeenth Century for a point of departure, it's pretty much not going to happen.

And note the British had no more interest in trying to oppose the US in North America through armed force after 1815 than the French did after 1867, and for the same reasons...and Mexico is no more eager to be a British client state than it was to be a Spanish province.

Good luck.

Best,

Sorry, I'm a little confused. If this war takes place as per OTL, then Texas was a republic for 9 years, then became a state. Are you saying that Mexico is going to try to re-conquer Texas? I understand the Oregon bit, with the Brits and Mexico working in tandem, although its hard to imagine them as allies.

As an FYI add more sentences to your post. The mods won't be happy with one sentence posts.

Anyways anything like that must require either America caught up in another war or Mexico to be much more developed. Considering how very few people live in the northern frontier expect it to be easy game by the US.

you have to POD the mexican independence. At the time of independence, Mexico had oodles of potential. the terms of independence and the ongoing decline afterward made it possible for the US to win. Contrast that with the US. post revolution, they went into rebound mode. all wasn't rosy, but overall the arrow pointed up, whereas the Mexican arrow pointed down. Find yourself a Mexican Washington - someone who unifies and steadies the country - and Mexico doesn't go into decline mode. Maybe a Spanish prince, which the initial revolutionaries wanted. good luck finding a competent one.
