AHC: Mexico gets Cuba?

During the first half of the nineteenth century there was a debate in Mexico about annexing Cuba. People were concerned that if this was not carried out Mexico would become "a prisoner of the gulf" but ultimately it was opposed by the then president. The threat was serious enough that the Spanish fortified Havana during this time. So what if Cuba somehow became part of Mexico?

That "somehow" is going to be grasping at asb, as Cuba is very well defended and its population is highly loyal to Spain at this time.

Mexico abolished slavery after independence. This wasn't kosher with the Cuban plantation owner class who were dependent on slave labor to pick crops and were supportive of a strong Spanish presence to avoid another Haiti. If Mexico had Cuba and enforced abolition like it did in Texas, the Cuban planters will revolt and declare independence or support a Spanish restoration like in the Dominican Republic. Or even ask to be annexed by the United States and I assure you, the United States would have no problem involving itself in Cuba.

There was an attempt by Mexico during the war for independence to capture Cuba. Don't know anything about it.

What if Spain is distracted with a war in Europe (Say with Britain or France), and a Haiti happens at the same time? Mexico then uses the opportunity to send and army supporting the slave revolt? What if they get support from a rival European country which doesn't want to send troops to Cuba directly but is happy to assist the Mexicans and slaves?

Slaves are actually the minority in Cuba, as it was extensively European settled. That's why it was so loyal to Spain until the entire island started being oppressed, and even then it took a long time for people to want to revolt.

Besides that, the Caribbean Spanish are a MUCH different culture and people then the mostly mezito Mexicans, and would never stand to be ruled by them. That's why they didn't revolt with the other Spanish colonies in fear that they would be heavily oppressed and their economies being ruined by the outlaw of slavery. Mexico would face ENDLESS insurgency on Cuba if it tried to rule there.

So would you say this is ASB? What if they received British/French assistance? What other options would you say are more plausible? How about Santo Domingo or Puerto Rico?

Or let's say Mexicans manage to briefly wrest Cuba from the Spanish but are forced to retire after the Cubans revolt, What would be the effect of Mexico semi successfully invading a different country? What would be the effect on the Spanish of their defeat however temporary?

Would the European powers (here's looking at you Great Britain) just sit back and let Cuba become American? I completely agree that a Mexican Cuba becomes a foreign Cuba very quickly, but I'm not sure the UK will let something that valuable go to the Americans without a fight (political, not actual military war).
