AHC: Mexican Philippines

The Philippines were part of the Viceroyalty of New Spain and were only spun off when New Spain declared its independence as Mexico. My challenge to you is to make the Philippines fall under (independent) Mexican control in one way or another.

Hmm... Say, during the peninsular war, the king of Spain is forced to flee to Mexico City, similarly to how the Portuguese royal family left to Brazil. We could see a parallel situation with Brazil, in the end resulting in Mexico getting all of former New Spain.

1. Napoleon correctly observes that he has a better chance to control Spain diplomatically than militarily, but only after already having invaded the country.

2. Spanish crown flees to Mexico City while Napoleon sets up a puppet government that blatantly serves him.

3. The British treat the Mexico City government as the continuation of the Spanish crown, helping them regain control over the empire and out of the hands of "Spain", expecting help in their war effort in return.

Then that situation has to last for an appreciably long amount of time. Enough time for Buenos Aires and the other complainers to try to declare independence, probably in roughly the same way, but it's possible you would have an even more Napoleonic-inspired South America.

What's left would be interesting, as it would just be Mexico except ruled by the Spanish crown. At that point the Spanish royalty would be ruling over Mexico and not Spain, most likely leading to a lot of succession questions in both countries.

It seems to me that war between Mexico and Spain over who is the true Spain would be almost inevitable, especially in the second generation of rulers, and whoever wins that will win the Philippines.

It's a really contrived scenario, but it gives Mexico at least a solid basis on which to claim the Philippines.

I believe Mexican Philippines is possible. However, Philippines like any other Spanish colony is still subject to the same rebellious conditions as any other Spanish colony.

That means, if Mexico/Spain wants to control the Philippines, mexico/Spain still needs to stop the rebellions and project power. It is not like it is automatic that whoever controls Mexico/Spain controls Philippines.
