AHC: McClellan, the American Napoleon

George McClellan was frequently called “Young Napoleon” for his resemblance to the French Emperor and initial military success.

So, is there a way for McClellan to lead a coup against the US government and/or become a dictator? Even better, could there be some near-ASB scenario where he declares himself Emperor?

In a word: No, baring some REALLY mad-hat circumstances. Coups are really only possible when he army is autonomous from (For command, supply, ect.) and the piller supporting the legitimacy of the current civilian government, while the soldiers have more loyalty to their general than their home. Such are not the situations the Union faced in the early 60's, even if McClellan would somehow develop the initiative to actually successfully orchestrate ac coup even in ideal circumstances and grow the backbone required to take the inherent risk in the action.

Not any chances. USA is not such state as First French Republic of Latin American states. Army is too loyal for democratic government. Not way that McClellan would get any support to coup even he would want. And there is another even bigger problem. McClellan wasn't ambitious or power-hungry enough. He even always run away when didn't believe that can't win a battle.
