AHC: Marie Thérese de France, Princess of Wales

A near ultimate challenge I've developed: get Marie-Thérese Charlotte, Madame Royale and only surviving child of Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette, to marry the future King George IV. How could Madame Royale get to Britain, single? Would see convert to Protestantism or would Parliament have to pass a law allowing for a Catholic Queen? Would the British try to claim the French throne for a third time? Would having his niece as future Queen of Great Britain and Ireland help Louis XVIII and Royalist cause? Or am I crazy and this is complete ASB?

ASB, and dear God, hasn't the poor girl suffered enough without inflicting George the Ineffable upon her?

Like George IV was any worse than the Duc d'Angoulême. And Ineffable goes to far. Yeah George IV despised Caroline but she gave as good as she got. He treated his mistresses and sisters very well, to say nothing of indulging his mother's at times bizarre behavior. She could do a lot worse. Also, during the later's exile in England, the Prince Regent and the Duchesse d'Angoulême were close friends. So the marriage could work out well.

There was a thread once where George IV ended up married to a Savoyard princess in an effort to contain French Revolutionary expansionism. That said, all that Parliament stipulated she do is recant Catholicism and convert to CoE.

AFAIK the Act of Settlement bars marrying papists, but is vague on the question of a sitting monarch marrying a Catholic or marriage to someone who is willing to accept "conversion" to CoE like the Russian czarinas did in forsaking their Protestantism for Orthodoxy.

Nope, I don't want to say it...

So it is possible for Maria Theresa of France to Marry George IV then?

I think so. It would take some work to be sure but it should be possible. For example, have the French Royal family's flight to Varennes succeed or instead have them flee to Britain. It would put Madame Royale and the Prince of Wales in direct contact and, once he decides to marry (which he will considering his debts) he could easily prefer a Royal bride whom he knows than one unknown.

I'll bet that, like the proposed match of Princess Beatrice and the Prince Impérial a century later, both mothers would support the match. The key issues would be the support of George III and the matter of religion. If the Kings of Britain and France can be brought to support it (IDK about what their feelings would be) then the religious question could be easily answered, either with Madame Royale converting or with a bill in Parliament authorizing the marriage, with Madame Royale remaining a Catholic. If its the later, it could still happen. After all, its been over a century sense England had a Catholic Queen (Mary Beatrice) and I know that the ruling classes did feel sympathy to the Bourbons (although how much I can't say, if Louis XVI's family is never imprisoned and executed), so there could be a bill to allow the marriage.

I don't think I have much to contribute but it would certainly be interesting if it were to happen.

The scenario where the family flees to Britain and which has Madame Royale and the Prince of Wales meeting and essentially growing up together does have merit. Certainly Caroline and Marie Antoinette would be very supportive of such a match especially if their children put forth the idea themselves. And I can totally see Prinny choosing the Princess he knows over the one he doesn't. And just imagining the two's building projects makes me giddy. Prinny was a better architect than he was King and it was a shame that he destroyed many of the buildings he created. Mayhaps there'll be a French flair to some of his newly built estates? Along with the Indo/Chinese flavor of some of his designs.
