The World Hockey Association (or WHA) was probably the most successful of the pro-hockey leagues to try and challenge the NHL for supremacy, but even it failed and was absorbed by the NHL in only eight years. However in it's short time they did attract a lot of star players, including the likes of Gordie Howe and Frank Mahovlich, and even got Maurice Richard to coach the Quebec Nordiques, if only for a few games. Perhaps more importantly, players like Wayne Gretzky and Mark Messier got their start in pro-hockey on WHA teams.
So you challenge, should you chose to accept it, is to make the WHA a success. They either have to rival the NHL for supremacy, or they have to over take them. Can it be done?
