AHC Make the Utah War last at least a year

Just as it says above, using any reasonable method, make the Utah/Mormon War last long enough to be considered a true civil war.

If you can make the Civil War start one presidential election earlier, such as the election of Fremont in 1856 followed by a secession crisis, then you could have a USA so distracted the South that it can't commit to defeating the Mormons quickly.

In that situation there wouldn't be a Mormon War. Brigham Young would declare for the Union and Utah would be left in peace for at least the duration of the Civil War.
