AHC: Make the Spirit of the Gay Nineties and Age of Imperialism Last 50 - 100 years.

If the world was to technologically advance, yet culturally stay still, how would the first half of the twentieth century turn out?

You can't advance technological change without similarly evolving cultural norms in reflection of the changes in social relations wrought by the new technology. You can't halt one part of a connected system without halting the other.

The problem is that the 1920s is what the 1890s would (and does) look like 30 years on. The 1990s is what that looks like 100 years on. The 1970s is the 1950s at twenty years old. And so on.

Well, if this were to somehow happen, you'd have a century of high society old money types never being in any financial trouble. There'd be no world wars, just a (somehow) constant simmer between world powers over various colonial holdings. The poor would stay poor, and the rich would stay rich, and the middle class would shift up and down just a bit.

I mean if you want to picture a world that is culturally 1890 but technology-wise modern, just picture the 1890's with cellphones, air conditioning, and the Internet. Only it would just be the rich who would have cellphones, and the butlers would print out each email and deliver it to the master on a silver tray.

"E-mail, sire..."
