One way to make the Scramble of Africa worse is to make it less of a white man's grave and more of an opportunity for industrious white settler. How could that happen ? Maybe something like this:
Step 1
John Gorrie (October 3, 1802 – June 29, 1855) was a physician, scientist, inventor, and humanitarian. Dr. Gorrie's medical research involved the study of tropical diseases. At the time the theory that bad air caused diseases was a prevalent hypothesis and based on this theory, he urged draining the swamps and the cooling of sickrooms.
For this he cooled rooms with ice in a basin suspended from the ceiling. Cool air, being heavier, flowed down across the patient and through an opening near the floor.
Since it was necessary to transport ice by boat from the northern lakes, Gorrie experimented with making artificial ice. After 1845, he gave up his medical practice to pursue refrigeration projects. On May 6, 1851, Gorrie was granted Patent No. 8080 for a machine to make ice.
Now unlike OTL it get the attention of a philanthropist/business investor/any financier. And gets more development. Sooner or later some bright spark in the East Indian Company realizes that air condition might make working in India proper much more attractive for white people.
Step 2
As in OTL DDT is first synthesized in 1874 by Othmar Zeidler under the supervision of Adolf von Baeyer. But unlike OTL its isecticide properties are realized in the next few year and not in 1939.As OTL Scientific studies on malaria make their first significant advance in 1880, when Charles Louis Alphonse Laveran—a French army doctor working in the military hospital of Constantine in Algeria—observed parasites inside the red blood cells of infected people for the first time.
He therefore proposes that malaria is caused by this organism, the first time a protist was identified as causing disease. For this and later discoveries, he was awarded the 1907 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine. A year later, Carlos Finlay, a Cuban doctor treating people with yellow fever in Havana, provided strong evidence that mosquitoes were transmitting disease to and from humans.
The European powers meet at the Berlin Conference of 1884–85, where they open one of the greatest and one of the worst chapters in history. While the Scramble of Africa proceeds as OTL the colonial powers also reach an agreement for a World/Africa wide campaign that becomes responsible for the almost eradication of tropical disease. Obviously sooner or later DTT is going to lose its effectiveness but it could, together with artificial climatization, open a window for even more supreme white rule in Africa. Maybe throw in some earlier use of poison gas deployment on airships and the dystopia becomes perfect.
