AHC: Make the Goths more Successful

Hey all.

Basically what it says on the tin - either have the Ostrogoths resist the huns or the Visigoths resist the encroaching caliphate. Are there any reasonable POD's or ways to make this work?

Success here defined as "A recognisable Gothic nation persisting until at least the High Middle Ages in either Eastern Europe, Italy, North Africa or Spain"

I hope there are some forumites more knowledgeable than I :)

I'm not very knowledgable about the Goths, but I'll bump this thread in hopes that someone who actually is would post here for you.

Best of wishes, man. :)

If Theoderic had a son as heir, the powerstruggle which weaked the Ostrogoths could propably avoided and the Romans would propably not invaded.

Well you could have a more stable succession for Theoderic The Great that keeps the Visgothic and Ostrogothic kingdoms together.

Hmmmmm, look to my Sig, and your answer shall be given ;)

Okay, all self promotion aside, there are a few ways for this to come about. The route I took was to have Theodoric have a son and a stable transfer of power to that son, as well as the Goths managing to keep Clovis out of Aquitaine and Provence. All of which, mind you, is actually doable.

I also think though, that you could have a later POD that can result in a Gothic state. Just off the top of my head, with better diplomacy you might end up with a partitioned Italy with the Byzantines holding Rome and all lands south, while the Goths are more concentrated in northern Italy. Surrounded by strong neighbors, this could actually lend itself to the creation of a strongish state, as well as the maintenance of an independent identity.

I always wondered, having checked the Wiki articles on eastern germanic languages, if a population could have somehow survived eastward, back more or less along what was maybe their homelands back then - apparently roughly modern Poland. But then, the slavic peoples coming, and also the balts...

There was apparently still a small Gothic population in part of the Crimea until at least the 16th century.
