AHC: Make the Dacian language last longer

with a POD starting in 1 AD, make sure a Dacian language survives until about 1700, with some prospect to survive beyond.

one rule: it remains a Dacian language, even iff you throw in tons of loanwords:D

I did this awhile ago, but the POD was a much less drastic victory for the Persians at Thermopylae that allowed them to conquer all of Greece and into the Balkans. No Roman Empire, no Romance languages, but instead Celtic, Illyrian, Dacian, and Thracian all survived and splintered. Instead of a Finno-Ugric language on the Pannonian Basin, there was an Iranian language descended from Persian with some Scythian, and lots and lots of Dacian/Germanic/Slavic influence.

Maybe a Dacian king at the time of Roman invasion decides to settle his people on the other side of the mountains.

Following Aurilian's withdrawal, the Free Dacians reconquer the province and reconsititute a Dacian Kingdom. Roman emperors would campaign against them for nearly fifty years after this, including Constantine the Great who took the title Dacicus Maximus in 336.

Following this and under Constantine's influence, the Dacians convert to Christianity and the bible is translated into Dacian. This helps cement the Dacian identity and they are among the missionaries to the Germanic tribes. If they ride out the Hun and Avar invasions, they may be able to assimilate the incoming Slavic tribes (although Dacian would absorb a lot of Slavic loanwords)

could the free Dacians do such a thing?
did they have a leader at that time?

never quite understood who they where:(

Making it a religious language seems like a good idea!:D

one question though: they can ride out the huns and avars by retreating into the forrests and mountains, but what about the Goths?
once Aurelian retreats the Goths might take their shot at Dacia as well.

assimilation of the Goths or something else??

The Free Dacians were the ones who remained outside Roman rule. I don't know any leaders at the time since there's not much known of them.

As for the Goths, they seemed to be content on the shores of the Black Sea and on the Dnieper at the time of Roman withdrawal, and wouldn't move into the area until the Huns pushed them there. Most crossed over the Danube for Roman protection. I think there are several options:

1. If they cross the Danube in TTL, they won't be in Dacia long enough to have much of an effect.

2. If Goths raid the area before settling down, the mostly male Goth raiders would be assimilated into the Dacians.

3. If whole tribes move into the area, I think the Dacians could assimilate them as well, due the prestige of Dacian as a religious language, but the language would absorb a lot more Germanic loanwords.
