AHC: Make the 1936 election less devestating

The 1936 election was a landslide victory for FDR. He beat republican candidate Alf Landon, who won only 8 electoral votes. The Challange is to make it a "less devestating" loss for Landon. In other words, Landon doesn't have to win, he just has to lose by a smaller margin(preferably a significant margin)

Great Depression gets worse?

Or there's the easy cop-out where Landon's VP gets assassinated.

FDR trips and falls during the campaign revealing for the rest of the world to see, his polio. His numbers immediately dip leaving the Democratic party much weaker. Huey Long decides to take advantage of this and run on a Share Our Wealth ticket. The emergence of Long's socialistic plans scare many Americans which is taken advantage of by Landon and the GOP. Due to the left vote being split between FDR and Long the election becomes anyone's game.
