Star Trek: Nemesis had big expectations leading up to it. It was an evenly numbered Star Trek film, so it was assured to be good, and it was to be the epic final conclusion to the Next Generation era. And there were rumblings someone was going to die, perhaps Picard. So it was awaited with anticipation.
What we got was a not at all very good film with a lot of dull parts, where everyone was shoved back into place like it was Season 5 of the TV show totally ignoring the characters had moved on to other things, and it was directed by someone who had no knowledge of Star Trek, let alone the Next Generation (he kept referring to Georgi LaForge as an alien when directing). And worst of all, the indulged Brent Spiner in killing Data; a fact that, after I finally saw the movie on DVD, made the young lil' me cry like a bitch. The reason I did that was one, being raised on TNG, all those characters felt like relatives, and two, I did not feel that Data got the chance to develop now; my feeling was, as is still my feeling, that he was robbed of his chance to grow into a human being, and now he would never get that chance. And I can't stand that explanation of by sacrificing himself, he finally became human. No, he didn't, he just died. And honestly, all Brent Spiner had to do if he felt he was too old to play Data was stop showing up when they wanted to do another movie. If the death were done in a better way, then I probably would be fine with it, but as it was, I just am not.
Star Trek: Nemesis would prove to be the last voyage of the Next Generation, if only because it finally put the nail in the coffin of Star Trek, along with ENTERPRISE, and forced them to reboot the entire universe several years later.
The challenge here is to make a 10th entry in the Star Trek film series that is good. It doesn't even necessarily have to be Nemesis, as perhaps there are other stories they could have done.
