AHC. Make New England Secede in the 1840s.

What is the most likely scenario where New England would secede from the Union in the 1840s?
Would it be during the Mexican-American war, where most of New England was against the war? (in this case, they would still eventually, get the territory they acquired in the OTL mexican-American war)
or
would it be during a moreso belligerent Oregan war, therefore making a Anglo-American war? (which would ensure an smaller, and decreased territory in the continental US )

The 1840s is way too late. Better to try in the 1790s and 1800s. 1810s at a maybe. By the '40s New England was firmly entrenched as American, and its far too early for destabilizing effects, such as socialism, to mitigate that.

Well the Missouri Compromise in the 1820's and then the Kansas-Nebraksa act of 1854 led to the creation of the Republican party and Lincoln.

I suppose if the Missouri Compromise fell thru and New England saw a faster spread of slavery in the 1820-1850 range, they could be so outraged they leave instead of fighting slavery
