AHC: Make most western nations hostile toward organized religion

With a POD after January 1, 1900, make most people and institutions in western nations hostile towards organized religion, but not necessarily personal belief in God. Here are some things I'd like to see:

The European/Commonwealth monarchies remain in place, albeit with a greater emphasis on separation of church and state. (eg: the Queen is no longer "Defender of the Faith")

US politics loses as much religious rhetoric as possible.

Maybe some countries pass formal laws banning any mention of God in parliament/congress?

The western world must remain as democratic as in OTL. (No communism etc.)

Also, what other effects would such a society have on things like women's rights and homophobia?

This seems like it's bordering on ASB...

Well, I thought it would be called ASB, but what's the closest thing we could get to what I want? The closest thing I could think of is somehow butterflying the Cold War (at least for reducing religious rhetoric in the US).

You could easily butterfly the Cold War by simply stopping the Bolshevik Revolution.

You could also create some kind of Religiously motivated conflict that kills a lot of people and sort of leaves a bad taste in everyone's mouth as far as religion is concerned.

The French revolution could have been more against religion. Maybe the writers of the US constitution does the same. Napoleonic* wars are more successful and the ideas spread to Italian and German states. American and French imperialism causes other places around the world to adopt anti-religion policies. By 2013, most of the west is atheist or agnostic.

The fact that the French Revolution was anti-clerical to the extent that it was IOTL was a big reason that it failed to realize its full potential. Had it been more so, it would have conclusively failed altogether.

Actually, I learned recently that the Revolution was more anti-clericalist, against Rome's power in France and the 'curés' than against ALL religions, not even all Christianism.

A lot of Protestant thinkers and actors of their history, from the prejudice they got, actually at least stayed neutral if not pro-revolution it seems. The legacy of the Saint-Barthélémy, of Louis XIV'S moves, etc... And the Jews didn't get much problems.

For some Protestants, the fact the Revolution was, according to peoples like Henri Guillemin, not so much pro poors as the historiographty shown at times may have played a role.

'Dirty' up protestants somehow maybe before the Revolution, like a coup of fanatical protestants, maybe... OR push up proto-socialist ideas more, for an indirect angle.

And to return to anti-clericalism, the awesome serie by Henri Guillemin, 'L'autre avant guerre', shown that anti-clericalism and anti-religions moves like Jules Ferry did can actually work with capitalism, reactionaire power. etc. An usefull scapegoat.
