AHC: Make Mardi Gras A National US Holiday

Besides being a local holiday in Louisiana and Mobile, Alabama and a celebrated holiday in Latin America can the US have Mardi Gras a major national US holiday? Will it require a major cultural upheaval? More Catholics perhaps?

Mardi Gras celebrations have actually spread beyond New Orleans and Mobile...

if you had some corporate muscle behind it like Guinness with St. Patrick's Day or the Mexican breweries with Cinco de Mayo...it'd easily become something like those days...but that's part of the beauty of it is that it's local and not corporately sponsored...

all that being said, it'd be fun to watch the reaction of the Comusites (members of the Mystik Krewe of Comus, the most stuck up and socially elite group in NOLA) to some major corporate bucks flowing in to a few organizations...

Mardi Gras, which loosely translates to "Tuesday Festival" is the last day to party before Lent begins...

you'd need a larger non-Irish Catholic population to make it spread more...

or more tourist destinations like Galveston (which has a pretty big celebration) promoting it to bring in more tourist money and for it to spread

Why did Irish people not celebrate it?

They follow the British/Northern European pre-Lent celebration of Shrove Tuesday / Pancake Tuesday.

At one point Shrove Tuesday use to be a bit of a riot with rival connected towns playing all in game of Football (Soccer) on the road connecting them with the goals being the church doors.
