A Franco-Scottish partition of England, with the Scots renaming their country Great Britain to show they won't yield to France.

Edgar the Ætheling holds William of Normandy to a standstill, leaving a rump Norman state to the south and "Great" Britain to the north?

Communist revolution in Britain because of the failure to address concerns in society. Eventually the leader is from Manchester, and following a suppression of "counter-revolutionaries" in London, decides to make the key center of British unionism (plus his hometown) the capital of Great Britain.

Seeing as Manchester was not all that significant during the middle ages as a town, I think such a big change might butterfly the existence of Manchester as we know it today. I think the best way to accomplish this would be through some form of revolution from the 18th century onwards. Perhaps the vulnerability of London to sea attack persuades the revolutionary government to move its HQ to a landlocked industrial city outside of the south east, and Manchester would fit that bill, at least I believe it would prior to the construction of the canal during the late 19th century.

these ideas are great! :)

the revolution thing sounds like a good option.
maybe a longer living autocratic stuart monarchy causes a civil war sometime in the 1700s and a rival claimant to the throne sides with the revolutionary's with a base in Manchester? :)

Or simply London not being available due to a random reason, like, France or Stuarts owning it.
