AHC : make Mad Max real

Your mission, if you accept it, is to completely obliterate modern civilization, with a POD set between 1945 (the beginning of the Cold War) and 201X (the near future). Obvious solutions like global thermonuclear warfare are allowed, ASB is not. Good luck !

My attempt, setting the events in the films five years in their resepctive futures.

----

Late 1970s OPEC limit and inflate the value of oil supplies causing friction with other countries. West falls into depression as oil becomes scarce/expensive and negotiations with OPEC break down.

1980 Worldwide depression causes crime to sky rocket in many western nations. Australia is no exception. Soviet Union falls under military rule.

1985 Urban Australia is in disarray, with federal government seemingly having little control. State governments take the lead, investing in a their respective police forces for defence and bending (turning a blind eye) to the law

1985 Max Rockatansky is a police officer in NSW, based out of the Sydney suburb of Sun City. He, along with his colleague, Goose have a run in with motorcyclist, the Nightrider and his gang. Following the death of Goose, Max begins to doubt his future in the force and sets off on holiday to Southern Highlands with his wife and child, who are ultimately murdered.

Max goes postal.

1986 Tensions in the Middle East go overboard as a US-led coalition try to access oil reserves by force. Within four months there is a nuclear exchange, with limited attacks on Australia, including the greater Sydney area

1987-8 Mad Max 2 - Australia is in disarray. With major cities in ruins, the gangs of recent years take a hold and increasingly base themselves in rural areas where there is access to fuel. Max assists one small fuel depot that is holding out, allowing them to flee the thousands of kilometres north east to Cairns in Far North Queensland, an outpost of civilisation and order.

1993 Mad Max 3 - Australia begins to stabilise around a few makeshift inland communities under local control. One such community is Bartertown in the outback of north western NSW.

Max meets some teenagers whose plane ditched seven years earlier during the exchange.

Ultimately these kids flee to the abandoned ruins of Sydney and restart a community there

Whatever has happened to the rest of the planet Ford Australia must be around to make this

1970 : Indonesia starts its own nuclear program with soviet assistance.
1976 : Indonesia successfully tests its first nuke. Out of atomic fear, Australia joins NATO and begins building huge underground shelters below major cities and key infrastructures.
1977 : Ford releases the Elektra, a relatively affordable electric car with cutting-edge technology. Due to the peak oil crisis, the Elektra quickly becomes a huge success, making Ford Co. the second most powerful company in the world.
1978 : Ford considers expanding its operations into Australia and secretly buys from the Australian government most of the country's bunker infrastructure.
First session of the AUSCAR, Australian equivalent of the NASCAR. The Ford Team obtains a total victory.
1979 : Ford releases the Interceptor, a V8 sports coupé based on the Ford Team's AUSCAR prototype. This time, however, the Interceptor completely flops, due to its ridiculous gas mileage in the middle of the peak oil crisis. All the unsold Interceptors (nearly 100.000 in total) are stored indefinitely in underground warehouses scattered across Australia.
1980 : In East Berlin, the slow breakdown of the Warsaw Pact Bloc economy causes increasing civil unrest. It culminates the February 2, when a street fight between dissidents and East Berlin policemen devolves into a full-scale riot that soon spreads to other East German cities.
On February 10, rioters overrun an East German barrack in the outskirts of East Berlin, stealing weaponry and explosives and turning the riots into an armed uprising. The Red Army finally intervenes, but it is too late : the insurgents have used the explosives to create a breach in the Berlin Wall, allowing East German citizen to seek refuge in West Berlin. Once arrived, Soviet and East German peacekeeping forces begin shooting at anyone trying to cross the Wall. As West German citizens are killed by stray bullets, West Berlin police forces retaliate. Panicked West Berliners then flock into the airport to rejoin mainland West Germany and flee West Berlin. Out of confusion and paranoia, West German commercial jets flying over East German territory are promptly shot down by East German anti-air defenses, and an air battle quickly ensues between East and West German air forces.
To end the state of confusion and of undeclared war, president of the USA Jimmy Carter and premier of the USSR Leonid Brezhnev agree to an emergency meeting in Frankfurt on February 14. But on the way to the meeting, Carter's convoy gets ambushed by West German anarchists and his limousine blown up by a RPG shot, effectively killing him. Out of paranoia and believing it was a Soviet plot to decapitate the US government, the USA declares war to the USSR. In responses, USSR, launches an invasion of West Germany, initiating WWIII and its European front.
1981 : To stop the Soviet advance into West Europe, the USA decides to strike deep in enemy territory and sends a SEAL strike team in Leningrad to destroy the military harbor and to disrupt the city's logistical activities. Seeing this as the opening move for a full-scale invasion of the Russian Motherland, USSR launches nuclear strikes against numerous military, civilian infrastructures and major cities in America. Detecting the launches, USA retaliates in a similar way, and soon, the thermonuclear warfare extends to client states of both blocs, plunging the entire world into utter anarchy.
After all NATO facilities in Australia have been destroyed by soviet nukes, an Indonesia left relatively intact seizes the opportunity and launches all of its nuclear arsenal on Australia, effectively causing the latter to cease to exist as a coherent state.
As the Australian government collapses, survivors organized into gangs raid en-masses the Ford Co. bunkers, stealing all the Interceptors they can.

Today, the Ford Interceptor is still the most popular vehicle among Australian scavengers, thanks to its incredible speed and horsepower and its robust conception.

Does this apocalypse pleases you ?

Nice one:) But you needn't do a recap of the events from the Mad Max trilogy. Just to lead the world into a Mad Max-esque situation of complete chaos and collapse of the civilization.

The whole post apocalypse thing was only a factor in Mad Max II and III. The original, which is the only one that matters, only requires Australia to have (in the late 70/early 80s, the kind of lawlessness Mexico has (in certain areas) right now.

Yeah, but the idea of this AHC was to create a post-apocalyptic setting not necessarily related to Mad Max
