AHC: Make colonialism last as long as possible

I posted this here because it probably requires a POD before 1900. How can we make European colonial empires last as long as possible? It seems there's a certain shelf life to just having police states, as Portugal basically tried to do everything it could and they still couldn't hang on longer than the 1970s. I'm guessing we need to change something other than military force. Preventing nationalism? A more isolationist or actively imperialist US that didn't encourage anti-imperialism?

Have the Prussians lose the Franco-Prussian War it will lead to no Alsace-Lorraine incident, no WW1, no crippling of the European Imperial Powers, no ascension of the USA as the world superpower and no decoloniastion for decades longer and even when it does the European powers will try to keep their former Empires close (federalisation, economic dominance, etc).

I think the best way to do it is to avoid the idea of white man's burden and conquering the whole world just for prestige. If they stuck to smaller, more manageable, more profitable empires as in the age of discovery, they should be able to maintain them much better.

That and/or avoid the world wars.

Which bits would you exclude as unprofitable? As I understand it Asia was mostly profitable, and only the Congo in Africa was.
