He turns anti-imperialist as a result of witnessing atrocities during the Boer War? Though I'm guessing he was at least aware of such things IOTL, and it didn't seem to bother his conscience.

Maybe he ends up being drawn into communist circles during his days at university? It isn't impossible for Priveliged people to become communists after all wasn't Lenin the son of a wealthy school administrator?

I feel like there's potential here. As a young man he was strongly anti-religious and he criticized the way POWs were treated both in Sudan and South Africa. Maybe these experiences help... but that's still a long way from full-blown Marxism

Best way would be early contact with actual Socialists introducing him to Marxist literature and thinking. Also a network of likeminded individuals could reafirm his believes. This could lead to him being alienated by the politics of the British upper class and aristocracy.
