AHC: Make Canada a republic

With a POD no earlier than 1815, make Canada stop being a Commonwealth Realm and become a republic.

No "Canada join the US lel" please.

Have Canada become a Kingdom in 1867, have a popular monarch or two or three, followed by several really unpopular and crappy ones. Have it come to a head in the 1930's Great Depression, and boom, Canadian republic.

Ah yes, the King-King Affair.

---

I could see this being negotiated in exchange for Quebec staying in Canada. Alternatively, a Liberal or NDP government may propose a referendum on the issue after Elizabeth dies.

Oh wait, this is BEFORE 1900? Revolutions of 1837, no?

The problem is that neither took off in a big way. The Lower Canada rebellion was more successful and lasted a little longer than the Upper Canada rebellion, but it still would have only been a matter of time before Britain stamped it out.

The best chance is for Canada to become a Kingdom with its own king, have things go really well for a while until around WWI where more Canadians will question the necessity of their involvement, as they are their own Kingdom now. Factor in the Great Depression just two decades later with a shitty monarch on top of that (who's lavish lifestyle and excess will sting more in Canada as it will be more present) and it's quite possible for a majority of Canadians to demand a referendum on becoming a republic.

It's peaceful and entirely plausible.

To make a it Canada a republic you need it to have it own revolution, like maybe in 1867.;)

There were already two largely unsuccessful rebellions in the most populous provinces in the 1830's, and it was mainly over legislation without representation. That's why after British North America got its own legislative parliaments for each of the colonies, insurrection and calls for rebellion/revolution died down. I'm telling you, the most probable, plausible, and realistic scenario is the one I outlined earlier.

Turning the country red might not help. Unlike in the UK, Aus, etc. socialism isn't closely tied to republicanism here, especially on the Prairies. Socialist Winnipeg loves the Queen and always has.

Who said anything about going red? Just having the chips in place to have a majority of Canadians want a republic.

You could easily have Canada be a republic, and still remain in the Commonwealth.

The best way for Canada not to be in the Commonwealth is for their not to be one. Pretty much either a Commonwealth has Canada, or it doesnt exist.

The Commonwealth was originally of keeping ties between Britain and the Dominions, as those started to gain full independent status.

If the biggest dominion doesnt join, you have a UK-Antipodes group, not a commonwealth.
