AHC: make Botany Bay fail

Mate it's a comedy, a highly entertaining one. You should've guessed that from the quote of his you quoted.

Then I guess your comment was made in jest, so I'm sorry I missed the irony.

As you could probably guess, I'm a bit of a Bligh apologist. I believe he's been degraded (without him having the possibility of defending his name) throughout time by the likes of Mel "what is history? I have no clue" Gibson and his ilk, and the good old Aussie larrikin jumping on the band wagon.

I actually have a desire to write a book showing my opinion of the man, but I can't see how you could portray the so called 'heroes against tyranny' (the three I mentioned) in any light that might have a ghost's chance of being published. Perhaps comedy is the way to go... then again, even the Simpsons have an anti-Bligh episode!!!

I should probably give Girt a read as I probably would apprecaite what he has to say.

That's fair enough. To be honest for all that Bligh was probably just insufficiently skilled for to job he was a bit of a tosser. He wouldn't have faced so many mutinies elswise. I don't think he was that bad of a guy, not even that he did that awful a job, but overall he should not have been governor.

Girt is very funny but it does not actually have much new to say on any given topic as far as I know. It's well written and researched, but it's goal is to make australian history as it is presently conceived more palatable to the average australian.

Well, having not been there it's kinda impossible to say, however from what I've read he was the kind of person who would punish when others would flog and flog when others would hang. So, he was probably too much of a humanitarian for the times. In todays navy he would probably be a fantastic captain (although he would probably be teased by his shipmates for his uniform).

I know it's a movie, but I'm reminded of the movie Master and Commander with Russel Crowe and how he had one of his ensigns having discipline problems. Part of his problem was that he wasn't tough enough on the crew. This may have been Bligh's problem... which is pretty much what Space Oddity said:

Pretty much. Bligh's problems tended to stem from a firm belief that people would be reasonable if you let them.

Anyway - enough Shanghai-ing the thread...
