AHC: Losing candidate deported

I was just watching the daily show and John Stewart responded to Gingrich's dropping out statement "I won't be giving up citizenship" by jokingly saying what if the losing candidate actually was deported? Create a timeline where that becomes either through tradition or constitutional amendment the losing candidates in the primary and/or general election is deported. One of the biggest chilling effects this would have I imagine is you'd get almost no third party or protest candidates.

well not to mention people like Nixon and G. Cleveland would not be able to lose and come back to serve.

Reality's way ahead of you. Athens used to exile tons of politicians with bad popularity (and losing generals) on n regular basis. It didn't work so well, of course, and meant massive injustice and talent drain.

Our founders were at pains to keep that from happening. Hence our Bill of Rights and powerful judicial system, among other things.

Though, OTOH, considering Newt, maybe Athens had it right and we have it wrong...

Not just the candidates and generals, but often their supporters as well. Imagine if, say, Mitt Romney were elected; Mr. Obama and all his supporters would be deported. If we took it to extremes we could exile everyone who voted for the loser(s) as well; imagine exiling all who voted Republican in 2008!

I imagine we'd wind up with a one party system, where the actual election, er, selection, took place at the party convention and the 'election' was a simple rubber-stamping of the chosen candidate.

If you're going to deport everyone who votes for the loser(s) you might as well just declare the deported people the successor state to the original. After two elections the deported population are going to be more numerous than those who remain.
