AHC: Longest 20th Century War

As we all know, the 20th century was rife with war and misery lasting pretty much from the moment it started to the moment it ended.

Today, you're challenge will be to extend that suffering out for as long as possible; to craft the longest conventional war of the 20th century. Keep in mind that this war can not be a pseudo-cold war; it must be a non-stop (that is to say, no long-term armistices) conventional conflict in the tradition of say WW1 or WW2, though it doesn't have to be a total war or completely destructive.

Some have termed the period between 1914 and 1945 the "New Thirty Years' War" due to commonalities in its participants. Arguably speaking, the end of the Ottoman Empire and the French occupation of the Ruhr overlapped in 1923, the former finishing the last loose ends of the First World War and the latter formenting the beginnings of the Second. If these could be made more violent it would fulfill this challenge.

You could see a major European war between Britain/Germany/France against the USSR last for an extremely long time, and this would require a non-Nazi (or more moderate Nazi party, which is almost ASB). If the US is kept totally put of this war, you could see the war lasting an extremely long time if the war bogs down and the West or East are un-able to gain a major offensive against one another.

Well the longest is quite possibly the Internal Conflict in Burma/Myanmar, which is still ongoing after more than 67 years, which is longer than even the Basque Conflict's 52 years. And then there's the South Thailand Insurgency, which has been going for about 55 years, the Columbian Conflict which has been going on for about 51 years, as has the Insurgency in Northeast India, and I think that's it for wars over half a century (depending on where you count the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict from it could be of the same length as the Burma/Myanmar one). For the 40-50 year wars, you have the Naxalite-Maoist Insurgency, both the Muslim and Communist rebellions in the Philippines, the Papua Conflict, and in a few months the Cabinda War will cross the threshold too.

Now what was the question again?

67 years, and you thought the Japanese holdouts were hardcore. At this point they're fighting the children of the children of the original fighters.

Maybe we should go for broke and try to contrive a New Hundred Years' War?

Maybe instead of two big bursts, maybe a continuous stream of medium-sized bursts throughout the century -
  • Balkan Wars
  • Ottoman insurgency
  • Afghan Wars
  • Inter-colonial conflicts
  • Sino-Russian Wars
  • Wars over the Pacific
  • Great Game gone hot
  • Religious wars
Take your pick. :D
