Wouldn't anything in Latin America also have the effect of extending the duration of the war as well since doesn't it mean that some number of American troops would be deployed south, instead of North Africa or England, to deal with an actual or at the least perceived threat to the US much closer to home ?
Exactly what I was thinking. Also they could threaten the Panama Canal. All it would take is one good strike to destroy a lock and you've just added 7800miles to a ocean voyage.
Loading a freighter with nitrates and gunpowder and blowing it in the
Gatun locks would close it for months.
Say the Nazi's don't attack Brazilian shipping and a Pro-axis leader rises in a bloody coup, takes Brazil and declares for the Axis.
Novo Brazil (or whatever) acts a base for German and Italian submarines and raiders in various locations along the Atlantic Coast.
Perhaps Venezuela and Colombia have Fascist take-overs or leanings as well.
Now you have 3 large nations that can directly threaten the Panama Canal in the Americas that are going to have to be dealt with by the Allies.
Perhaps a POD in the 1900's. More dictators etc... I don't know, just snowballing ideas..
