AHC: Large New World colony goes independant before 1776

With a POD of 1600, find a way for a decently-sized (so a short-lived Equadorian republic dosen't count) colony in the New World (or Oceania:D) to gain independance by at least 1750.

Would an independent New England or something to that effect be possible during the English Civil War?
If the Roundheads win, New England is unlikely, but would Virginia (+Maryland) have the capability to try to go at it alone as a sort of "England-in-exile" if the English Commonwealth never allies with France against Spain?

The Glorious Revolution becomes a civil war. James wins, but not immediately. Which gives New England time to declare for William, imprison Andros, and declare independence (albeit under a much less centralized government - or perhaps even eight states, most of them in alliance) when it's clear old England is lost.

Any of the Conquistador leaders could have realistically detached ties with Spain and become fully independent.I believe the sons of Cortes attempted to seize control of New Spain and found a new kingdom.

That's it right there. Have an alternate Cortes with less loyalty to the motherland do what Cortes did and you have an independent Empire of Mexico in the 1520s.

The King of Portugal has twin sons, and "settles" the question of which one counts as the heir by giving the other one the throne of Brazil instead.
