AHC - Lafayette as a Head of State

I'm aware that Lafayette was offered control of France during the July revolution, but he declined it. Incidentally, he was also given the status of "natural born citizen" of the US in 1784, which (theoretically) would have made him eligible for the presidency.

The challenge, then, is this:
Make LaFayette head of state of either (a) France, between the firing on the Champs-de-Mars and the end of the Terror, or (b) have Lafayette, with any post-US citizenship POD, become head of state of the US.

I'll be seriously impressed if B isn't ASB, but it's just something I thought of and found interesting.

Improbable : Lafayatte was too much tied with royal family, his anti-republicanism and its own social position to be credibly put at "head of state" in Revolutionnary France (a situation that, constitutionally, didn't existed officialy).
In fact he get close to be arrested as traitor in 1792, if he wouldn't had emigrated.

He did get arrested IOTL, while he was attempting to flee.

And to be honest, I figured both were unlikely, but given later events in France and te technicality in the US, I was simply curious what people could come up with
