Actually, the coup attempt was in November 1970, it was part of the years of lead, which had begun, just, 2 years earlier in late 1968, and, only, ended in mid 1988.
I doubt the CPI could win electorally by that point.

Have an Ethiopian Monarchist movement (an earlier version of the Moa Anbessa Party or Ethiopian Democratic Union) be more successful in the late 1970s after the Derg carries out a more successful Red Terror campaign which has destroyed the leadership of the TPLF. Additionally, the EPLF is crushed in Operation Red Star without the assistance of the TPLF and the Eritrean resistance movements there are successfully crushed while TTL's EMM manages to play on nostalgia for the Monarchy against the Stalinist reign of the Derg that remains unable to deal the decisive blow to the EMM. The EMM enters into an alliance with armed ethnic nationalist movements in the southern and eastern regions of Ethiopia against the Derg which is becoming ever more reliant on the Eastern Bloc for aid while the Ethiopian economy continues to deteriorate under Mengistu Haile Mariam's grip. You need to take your current country of residence and create a timeline where it split into two nations, like what happened to Germany, Korea and Vietnam.

Have a union between the Sovereign Military order of Malta and the papal states take place in the early to mid 19th century, only to break off due to the reunification of italy and subsequent expulsion of the order results in the SMOM somehow setting up an actual nation state in the balearic islands claiming to be the continuation of the papal states. Then with Lateran treaties in 1929, you now have two nation-states formed from the splitting of a predecessor.Challenge: Split the Vatican into two globally recognized sovereign states.
