AHC: Knights Templar not considered a secret society behind all conspiracies

It seems like their mysterious aura is based around the fact that they basically agreed to be dissolved and admitted to some pretty heinous crimes. What if they survived or what if they put up more of a fight? It seems like it was pretty important to the creation of the French state for them to get rid of this order.

I thought this had more to do with a modern (supposedly) non fiction book and it's ill advised fictional rip-off and their subsequent popularity than anything that happened in france during the High Middle Ages?

This one actually is the freemasons' fault. Seriously.

The early lodges in the eighteenth century developed a mysticism around the architecture of Solomon's temple. In the process of creating their history, they latched on to the Templars as suitably exalted predecessors. With the fashionably gothic mysteries of the great cathedrals, supposedly built according to mystical plans developed by the templars, and the revolutionary aura surrounding the "revenge of Jacques de Molay", they created a myth that fit its time and survived.

Well, the Templar's have always inspired the imagination, even before recent fiction.

A bunch of lowly knights, quickly rise to prominence, becoming a very rich and power organization throughout all Europe. And, in a very short period of time, it's all gone. It makes for one hell of a story.
