AHC: Kill Hanzi

With a POD after 1900, have China and Japan completely abandon logograms in favor of alphabetic writing, whether Latin or Cyrillic or something else.

You could have Mao really push for replacing Chinese characters with Pinyin...
OTL, he faced quite a lot of opposition though, which is why he failed in that...
Even the 2nd round of simplifications failed because they weren't based on pre-existing character usage (the simplified characters used in mainland China were actually based on variant characters colloquially used for centuries, or cursive writing).

In Japan, I think OTL they also did character simplifications after WWII, as well as restricting the number of characters that kids had to learn in school, as well as names...
But those character lists were I think expanded later on...
Personally, I think more likely (but still unlikely) is if they abandoned characters and purely wrote in kana, rather than going with alphabets...

I think one thing that could discourage the usage of characters could be if there were no computers/IT revolution, because they allowed characters to be written on computers...
Beforehand, whatever typewriters existed were very cumbersome at best...

I see one opportunity for the elimination of kanji. After WWII, whoever is in charge of the American occupation decides that Romaji is better for education and Japanese-American relations, and imposes Latin script by force. Very unlikely, but imaginable.
