AHC: Keep Yugoslavia as Together as Possible

What changes early on could have made this country more stable?
Could the exclusion of certain regions from this union initially prevent later separatism?
Could the inclusion of other states considered in OTL, such as Albania, lead to less disgruntlement among religious minorities?
If Yugoslavia survives long enough to join the EU, are their problems solved?

What If Tito had a strongman successor ? Maybe even a Dictator son to contain ethnic conflict and Serbian ultranationalism ?

How about a Yugoslavia is not non aligned that becomes more pro Soviet or pro western during the cold war and these bigger powers keeps it together by bribing local politicians as it should be a strong regional ally in the cold war

Perhaps they could have played more off the Sino-Soviet spit than they did in real life? I know Albania was able to pull this off to their advantage. Maybe they eventually make a solid choice to be like China and open up to the West?

To this end, you also need a less hostile Italy. Earlier formal resolution of the border question may help.

Yugoslavia needs a war to provide the basis for a stronger Yugoslav identity. It would have to result in minor territorial losses that leave country intact but angry, or a protracted conflict where Yugoslavia eventually defeats the aggressors occupying part of its territory. Romania had relatively good relations with Yugoslavia, so the most likely enemy alliance seems like Italy, Bulgaria, Hungary, Albania, and Austria.

OTL, there was a lot of alternation between centralism and federalism for the country as a whole. However, I think a more asymmetric or dual-track federalist arrangement might work if it sets up a centralized Serbo-Croatian speaking core (Serbs, Croats, Bosniaks), but provides some measure of autonomy for Slovenes, Macedonians, Albanians, etc. that are somewhat distinct branches of the Yugoslav nation.

As long as there is a modus vivendi between Serbs and Croats, Yugoslavia can survive. Separatism among only 1 or 2 smaller nationalities is a manageable threat for Belgrade.
