AHC - Keep the Dominion of Newfoundland independent

Newfoundland and Labrador votes for independence and the United States give massive aid for air and naval bases to help finance their government and trade deals allows the Newfounlanders to develop a sustainable economy that will keep them from dependent on Canada.

So basically the same deal as Palau and the Marshal Islands?

Newfoundland was a dominion between 1907 and 1949. Although in name only after 1934.

Since the government was full of corruption which the people blamed for the Great Depression being so bad, the new government voted itself out of existence, and World War II delayed a re-assessment of Newfoundland's status.

I wonder if to get an independent Newfoundland you'd need an early 20th century POD since the Great Depression messed up Newfoundland so much.

The referendum was something like 51% for to 49% against confederation with Canada. There was only 2% in it. I wonder what the exact number of people who would need to have their minds changed would actually be?

Perhaps some sort of faux pas by Canada that damages relations with Newfoundland? Perhaps the Canadian government might bring up the border dispute between Quebec and Labrador again? To be honest though it looks like by 1948-49 London was not convinced that Newfoundland could ever be a viable dominion.

An interesting alternative to consider might be a Newfoundland directly incorporated into the UK. Since the nearest part of the UK is Scotland imagine Newfoundland being administered as a distant bit of Scotland? Would be amusing to imagine the Newfies all having to drive on the left. :D

Not a particularly likely outcome but I do like thinking about the possible implications.

United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and Newfoundland? But realistically, I think it would have its own special status. I don't think the model of the British Overseas Territories would be acceptable in the long run, so maybe it would be a crown dependency like the Isle of Man? Or otherwise have a similar status to the crown dependencies. I think the best model might be France's overseas departments like French Guiana, but would that work in a British context?
