AHC: Jesuit kingdom in Paraguay

So I read Voltaire's Candide recently, and in one of the chapters he travels to a militant Jesuit kingdom in Paraguay that's fighting a war with Spain, with its capital in Asunción.. Any way this is remotely possible to be made a reality?

Satire of the situation with the Jesuit missions.

As frequently happens with Voltaire, he manages to make the bad guys the good guys, and the good guys the bad guys.

Yeah, but still, any chance of this happening IRL and if so, how?

It kind of did. The Jesuits had the natives arm to protect themselves from Spanish slavers, and occasionally helped them fight the bastards off. THAT was what Voltaire was writing about, since he thought this showed what dangerous, subversive, God-bothering bastards the Jesuits were, and how dangerous they proved to good Enlightened monarchies.

Well, the Jesuit missions were pressed on both sides by Spain and Portugal. Get them to play the two off each other- or rely on one for protection against the other in exchange for disputed territory.
