In OTL the Muslims managed to conquer Sicily. The challenge here is to have them conquer the southern half of Italy, creating a Italian equivalent of Al- Andalus. No PoDs after 1300.

If you want a pre-1300, ie non-Ottoman based, muslim conquest of southern Italy I think you have to go back to at least the 9th century. The Emirate of Bari had some success against the Lombard principalities. If you keep the Emperor weak or distracted its possible they could play off the rival powers against each other and slowly conquer the the various southern states like Normans did a few centuries later OTL.

I wonder what a name for Muslim Italy would be? Al-Nabuli sounds good to me. As for a PoD perhaps maybe the Fatamids pay more attention to Europe and continue efforts in the Peninsula.

I doubt theyd be able to stay. Thats really just too close to rome and the pope. I suspect strongly that crusades would be called until the muslims were ousted.

Sorry, no idea on a POD, but "Rum" (pronounced like "room") is often used in Arabic, though it's also frequently used to describe the Byzantines, who called themselves (and the Arabs didn't see a need to argue) "Romans".

Of course, this would all imply that "southern Italy" includes the city of Rome. Personally, while goofy and perhaps even ASB, I like "al-Hitha"--"The Boot".

Also, MY FIRST POST!!!!!!!w00t!!!!!

al-Hitha it is :D (By the way rum does not have to include rome, just as the Sultanate of Rum did not include Constantinople).

Welcome to the board by the way.

I think if they limit themselves to Apulia, Calabria, Basilicata and the Principality of Salerno there would still be a small buffer between them and Rome, if Naples and Capua remained. This is after all potentially a few centuries before Europeans started crusading if we assume a 9th or 10th century conquest. Though if they push into northern Campania and the Abruzzi by conquering Capua, Gaeta or Spoleto or even attacking Rome it would certainly provoke a reaction. I'd say Benevento and Naples would probably be the maximum extent but that may be pushing it.

As for a name I suppose it may be Al Lombardiya or Al Angopardiya or something like that reflecting the fact that they're mostly conquering lands from the Lombards in the south.

Welcome to the site! I think They would end up the Emirate of Rum given the seeming norm of naming the nation after it's capital city.
