A French victory in the Algerian War presumably would have meant continuation of the status quo, in which the native Algerian population was almost entirely disenfranchised. France was never prepared to grant full rights of citizenship to Algerian Muslims, knowing that this would seriously change the country's demographic makeup. (As de Gaulle put it, he did not want his village of Colombey-les-Deux-Églises to become Colombey-les-Deux-Mosquées.)
