AHC: Invasion of Afghanistan as start of "WW1 Analog"

Your challenge, should you choose to accept it, is to create a scenario where the 2001 invasion of Afghanistan results in a global conflict analogous to WW1, where:

9/11 attacks = Assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand
Al-Qaeda = Black Hand
Invasion of Afghanistan by USA = Invasion of Serbia by Austria-Hungary.

The closer you can make this global conflict to WW1 in terms of parallels, the better.

Pre-9/11 PODs are allowed as long as the 9/11 attacks, Al-Qaeda and 2001 Invasion of Afghanistan still take place.

(Also, I now have the image of USA breaking up into "USA" (Austria), neo-CSA (Hungary) and a whole bunch of its former possessions either becoming independent or being absorbed by other nations by the end of the conflict )

basically to challange the US Power against muslim Arabs and Afghanistan, you'll either need to have Russia never have much trouble with the muslims of central Asia (Almost impossible), or China never have a lot of trouble with the hui and xinjiang muslims (Almost impossible as well).

And according to my own redneck POV, the only one holding up against Americans are the lefties anti-war self-congratulating pacifists. Just look at how they ruin European demography.

It could be possible that an entanglement of alliances in the region could turn Afghanistan into a major conflagration. You could have Iran attacking Saudi in order to undermine the US war in Afghanistan, and Israel attacking someone else for its own purposes and boom! You're at war!

Yeah, thinking about the scenario more I see that if USA = Austria-Hungary and Afghanistan = Serbia than some kind of nation that encompasses the majority of the "Arab World" as was envisioned by the proponents of panarabism could be the Russian Empire analog. The panarab nation would control out of the oil in the Middle East and use the money to build up a decent millitary.

In that case, Israel would be the German Empire expy.

Not sure who the other powers would be yet though...

but yeah, put aside mass ammount of ironies involved, treating Arab and Muslim World as Yugoslavia / Balkan expy could work well, afterall, muslims are known to tore each others' first before uniting against outside enemy, just look at Sunni - Shiite conflict.

I would say Iran, but the Taliban is mostly Sunni, and the Iranians are mostly Shi'a... so that's out.

I'd say this is treading the ASB line because there's really no way the War in Afghanistan could trigger a WW1 analog, unless perhaps Turkey backed Afghanistan (probably ASB), and attacked US allies in Europe, leading to several nations being dragged into the war, blah blah blah.
