Nixon had horrible relations with India, so hypothetically if there is no 'Nam, what if instead America goes to war with India. Americans being drafted to kill poor brown people for being socialist (not even true commie) could have terrible effects on American politics and race relations. South Vietnam was teeny in size and population compared to india. It could be America's greatest sin.

This will drive India entirely closer to the USSR and more dead G.I. in Bengal I suppose. Pakistan Happy, possibly taking over Kashmir if the Indian troops there are neglected.

Well, the groundwork for Vietnam started all the way back in the 1950s, so you would have to have the POD take place then. If you want ATL's Indo-American to take place during the 1960s to replace Vietnam as the war of the decade, have Richard Nixon win the United States Presidential Election of 1960. I imagine that if an Indo-American War took place in 1972 or before, it would complicate Sino-American relations, because the PRC would fear US support for a Tibetan resistance group. India will resist violently and non-violently, leading to more casualties and a more damaged global reputation for the US. Pakistan supports the US, the USSR supports India, while the PRC supports the Naxalites. I imagine the United Kingdom would probably broker the peace talks in a conference in London.

It should be noted that while the INC had socialist leanings, it never had communist sympathies. In fact, the government put down several Marxist insurgencies and dissolved the communist controlled government in Kerala in 1959. During The Emergency, communists were among those arrested.

America's lukewarm relations with India IOTL seem like their own AH. We should've been the best of friends with the world's largest democracy.
